Instead, I use a USB power converter, the kind that comes with a cell phone, to power the USB power cord. I found this generated a sort of "beating" electrical interference. Also I recommend you not power the unit from the USB port on your computer. I suggest you not use batteries they wear out too quickly. I did notice on a few tapes I had to adjust the channel balance, but because on most tapes is was fine, I suspect the problem was in the original recording. The transfer quality is fine, almost better than expected for the price. If you haven't set the unit's volume control just right, you will also need to use the software to maximize the volume. I use the default "manual mode" and use my editing software (I use the highly versatile Goldwave) to separate the cuts. In other cases, it clipped off the first note or two of the song before recording commenced. In many cases, it recorded multiple cuts into one file. The device includes an "auto mode" that is supposed to be able to divide the separate cuts on your tape into separate files. Better to record with the volume slightly lower than optimal and adjust it in software. Tip: Don't set the volume too high or your recording will be "clipped" and distorted. I did not discern any difference when trying to use the black + and - buttons, so I simply use the thumbwheel to control the playback volume, and this controls the volume being recorded. The second is a pair of + and - buttons among the black "convert operate buttons." I have no idea, and the manual does not explain, the difference between the two sets. One is a thumbwheel on the end of the unit next to the USB port. I needed a flashlight and a magnifying glass to make out which buttons were which. Their purposes are listed but their placement is not specified. But the tiny black "convert operate buttons" are not. ![]() At least the "cassette operate buttons," on the outside of the case on the side where the large PLAY button is located, are identified in the user guide. The labels on the numerous buttons are all but illegible. The 32GM max is nowhere mentioned in the user guide. It will go through the motions and flash the correct lights, but nothing will be recorded. ![]() First off, it will NOT work with USB flash drives larger than 32GB. Took me a while to fully understand how to use this device.
